Choosing buttons is 🤯. Almost immediately the overwhelm set in, and my mind was racing — so many buttons, how do I choose?!? Well, whew, thankfully I found the ones to replace a well-worn, well-loved, custom fit work shirt I made. I have a long way to go on packaging, and that’s ok. Maybe it’s more like a ways to go.

It’s not just about packaging, it’s about letting the person know, on the other end of receiving, how incredibly special they are to me.

Most likely, I am going to be fumbling for awhile, on dialing in the packaging, and that’s ok, too. Better to try than not and keep moving.

Entrepreneurship is not for the faint of heart, it’s for the wicked, as in wicked good type, ‘no rest for the wicked’ type. Not to be confused with no rest tho — rest is productive. 🩷

Black — The LAST chapter in “The Secret Lives of Color,” by Kassia St. Clair.

Black — the absence of light.

Kohl — in a section of the Louvre, Bes, a statuette depicting the fierce fighter + protector of women, children and homes, lives. In his hollow head, is a small container for kohl eyeliner. The belief is in the magical properties of kohl, a mineral.

Payne’s gray — absolutely adored by artists for its ‘atmospheric perspective’ quality.

Obsidian — aka volcanic glass. It forms from molten lava erupting from the Earth, coming into contact with ice or snow and cooling very quickly. Dr. John Dee, an Elizabethan, English mathematician, astrologer, and natural philosopher used obsidian to call his spirits. The Aztec patroness of witches, Itzpapalotl, means obsidian butterfly. I love that.

Ink — the tendency for ink to be black is due to fluidity and ease. The ancient Chinese were known for perfuming inks with clove, honey and musk! Islam has a devotional relationship with black ink too — the Arabic word for ink, midād, is related to the divine substance or matter.

Charcoal — ‘a carbon-rich by product of organic matter — usually wood — and fire’. Purest and less ashy when oxygen exposure is limited.

Jet — aka lignite. A type of coal formed over periods, and periods of time from wood that is highly pressurized. At its peak formation, it can be carved and polished to a glassy sheen. Whitby, England is where the top notch jet is found.

Melanin — a true black that resides in the animal kingdom, though not in plants. Two types of melanin — eumelanin and pheomelanin. A raven, is an absolute, black animal excellence. Ravens are known to be visually striking, and very intelligent.

Pitch black — the absolute fearsome form of darkness! ‘What manner [of land] is this into which I have come? It hath not water, it hath not air, it is deep, unfathomable, it is black as the blackest night.’ — Book of Dead.

Read the entire book, documenting and posting each chapter. Learned so much, and the book traveled to many countries. Built a habit.

Reflecting before relaunching. Er, well launching the first garment and relaunching the newly, designed website. It’s taken time, and that’s ok. Would rather take it. I am a lover of slow and a lover of leisure. I am not a fan of the hectic, much, nor schedules nor deadlines, and the associated, undue pressure.

This morning heard the song ‘Slow Hands’ and was a good reminder of how much I love and fond of slow. That does not mean that one should procrastinate as I have the tendency to, it means there is a balance and self awareness surrounding. I learned, learned in the process of the redesign and launch, so much, and if that’s all there is at the end of the day, I’ve achieved and successful, by my own definition and terms. Not society’s.

I can see in these choices for the home page, the dynamic changes that will come, meaning the website designer mentioning, when I was having a hard time deciding, I could always change out the design. That felt good and made the decision easier.

Daily win, life win — I’ve been thinking a lot about my grandfather lately. There really isn’t a passage of time where he doesn’t enter my thoughts. He was one of the best men I’ve known, if not the best. I would be fortunate to cross paths with someone like him again. TC, as I called him, short for Thomas Clinton, his first and middle name.

Recently, on a trip home to Texas, came across this snip, my grandmother, JJ, another initial situation, cut out from The New Yorker (how apropos + kismet!) a little over a month after I was born. I was their first grandchild and it was that way for quite sometime.

TC built a rock solid business (this is my aim) that is still operating present day. And one that afforded a life of privilege though I don’t think it was the goal. It was an after effect. He was reputable, caring, considerate — he sponsored my soccer team I don’t know how many times, and genteel. Something I find missing these days. He wasn’t your shark like businessman yet his instincts were fierce. Fierce and fun. I never saw him red with anger or terrible to anyone, rather decent and humane, especially in civil discourse.

I hope to build my legacy much like his and glad I have his footsteps to follow. He’s the reason why I am such a college football nut, the reason why I know what it’s like to miss someone to your core and love unconditionally. He was a role model and father figure when I had none. He was my Mom’s Dad or my maternal grandfather.

TC was taken too soon from the world by, what I will call, a brutal form of stomach cancer, and one where I watched him melt away. He never succumbed to being anything but kind throughout the trauma of the disease and his death. He lived his life in kindness and as a gentleman, a true gentleman. This month is his birthday month, and this year marks 40 years since he has been gone. And I still miss him like crazy.

I love you TC and I know you are with me every day. 🩷

Brown — “The Secret Lives of Color,” by Kassia St. Clair.

Brown — is not a hue, it’s shade. A hue is pure color while a shade is a mixture of, or darker version of. Brown is associated with the color of the Earth.

Khaki — the term khaki originates from Urdu, meaning dusty. The word referred to cloth, generally used for military, dust-colored garments that blended into landscapes rather than calling attention to.

Buff — shortened from ‘buffalo’ and typically related to fighting — especially during the American Revolutionary War. It was George Washington who understood political allegiance depended, symbolically, on colors. He showed up wearing a new uniform of buff and blue in 1775, the new colors of USA, and eventually, liberty.

Fallow — known as one of the oldest color names in English.

Russet — so this one is special! Recently found the Dictionary of Color, see older post, and the book was mentioned. Similar to the scarlet color, russet is utilized to denote a type of textile rather than exclusively color. It’s a reminder of color living in imagination than a precise naming.

Sepia — the cuttlefish’s defense, liquid ink made up melanin with a ‘burnt-coffee brown’ color or sepia. It has also been used as a pigment for artists and writers throughout the ages, and in modern times, more in the context of photography and the tone.

Umber — theorized name from the Latin word ‘ombra’ meaning shadow and one of the OGs of colors used by humans.

Mummy — an artists’ shop in Paris calls itself ‘A la Momie’ in tribute to the dark brown powder mixed with oil and amber varnish to become a rich color.

Taupe — again, a joy to see the Dictionary of Color mention! The naming of taupe vexed researchers partly due to the French word, ’taupe’, meaning mole.

When I stop struggling, I float. It’s the law.

Friday morning, riding waves professionally and personally, upon returning from Belize + Mexico in the early morning hours of Monday, remembered the quote. There are ebbs and flows, some harder + faster, some gentler + smoother, some positive + negative, though the ebbs and flows, the waves will always be.

Right now, it feels like a battering, and one remarkable buoy, or wisdom, is staying the course. Especially when one is trying to be ripped from. It’s easy to get caught up and be eaten up with fear. Fear is another topic in and of itself.

What I’ve noticed recently, is if I take care and do best to, and gosh, it’s a lifetime work in progress, though one day everything clicks without trying, kind of like an epiphany, a sign of growth (be present and one will see, witness!), I’ll be alright.

The universe will always take care of me and much like the quote from the Wizard of Oz, “You’ve always had the power, my dear, you just had to find it for yourself.”

By the end of this month, (fingers crossed w/a prayer) JEK New York will feature a blog and writing to heart’s content without character limitations! And yes, of course, the product launch. 🩷

Green — “The Secret Lives of Color,” by Kassia St. Clair.

Green — viridis is the Latin word for green. The name is related to a large group of words that suggest growth and life itself; virere means to be green or vigorous, and vis means strength, and then the term carries on from there.

Verdigris — a natural (I love!). Verdigris forms on copper and bronze when exposed to the following elements: oxygen, water, carbon dioxide, or sulfur. The patina is often seen on old, copper pipes and the like, and of course, the lady herself, the Statue of Liberty. And it’s French for, ‘green from Greece’.

Absinthe — known as the ‘green hour’ aperitif by Parisians, who adored the drink. An aperitif made from wormwood, aniseed, fennel and wild marjoram, along with alcohol (55-75%), though at first used for medicinal purposes.

Emerald — the color of the Emerald City in the Wizard of Oz, and a metaphor for magically fulfilling one’s dreams. The gem is a rare, fragile and stained green with deposits of the elements chromium or vanadium.

Kelly Green — most thought of St. Patrick when the color is mentioned, however he was more associated with blue until the mid 18th century. The Catholics who wanted a symbolic color, found on the Irish flag.

Scheele’s Green — a color from the compound copper arsenic. The color gained popularity during the late 1700s due to a lack of green pigments and dyes, and was born from a Swedish scientist, Carl Scheele. Everyone used it and it was later found, after suspect deaths and sickness, a 6 inch square of wallpaper with the color, contained enough arsenic to poison 2 adults! It was never banned though.

Terra Verte — known as green Earth. The color is a naturally occurring pigment made up of a variety of hues and minerals; actually green earths.

Avocado — natural world color resulting from environmental movements beginning in the late 1960s.

Celadon — rooted in L’Astrée, a book written by Honoré ď Urfé, telling the story of a shepherd, Céladon and his tale of winning back his lost love. Also, referred to ceramics, with the celadon hue, originating in the East.

Green — “The Secret Lives of Color,” by Kassia St. Clair.

Green — viridis is the Latin word for green. The name is related to a large group of words that suggest growth and life itself; virere means to be green or vigorous, and vis means strength, and then the term carries on from there.

Verdigris — a natural (I love!). Verdigris forms on copper and bronze when exposed to the following elements: oxygen, water, carbon dioxide, or sulfur. The patina is often seen on old, copper pipes and the like, and of course, the lady herself, the Statue of Liberty. And it’s French for, ‘green from Greece’.

Absinthe — known as the ‘green hour’ aperitif by Parisians, who adored the drink. An aperitif made from wormwood, aniseed, fennel and wild marjoram, along with alcohol (55-75%), though at first used for medicinal purposes.

Emerald — the color of the Emerald City in the Wizard of Oz, and a metaphor for magically fulfilling one’s dreams. The gem is a rare, fragile and stained green with deposits of the elements chromium or vanadium.

Kelly Green — most thought of St. Patrick when the color is mentioned, however he was more associated with blue until the mid 18th century. The Catholics who wanted a symbolic color, found on the Irish flag.

Scheele’s Green — a color from the compound copper arsenic. The color gained popularity during the late 1700s due to a lack of green pigments and dyes, and was born from a Swedish scientist, Carl Scheele. Everyone used it and it was later found, after suspect deaths and sickness, a 6 inch square of wallpaper with the color, contained enough arsenic to poison 2 adults! It was never banned though.

Terra Verte — known as green Earth. The color is a naturally occurring pigment made up of a variety of hues and minerals; actually green earths.

Avocado — natural world color resulting from environmental movements beginning in the late 1960s.

Celadon — rooted in L’Astrée, a book written by Honoré ď Urfé, telling the story of a shepherd, Céladon and his tale of winning back his lost love. Also, referred to ceramics, with the celadon hue, originating in the East.

As I sit and tell myself, that what feels like a million little pieces, if not more, that have to come together to finish the site, as not to overwhelm, almost there. Home stretch.

While the hope was to have the product launched by end of year, and the product and the planned launch is absolutely, positively on track/done, the website build out is taking longer, and I am here for it. Don’t give up, I won’t, and keep moving forward — you’ve come so far. And take that in. Wearing this favorite sweatshirt today too. Giant hug.

Blue — “The Secret Lives of Color,” by Kassia St. Clair.

Blue — it is a fact that everyone, even those who do sense of sight, have a special receptor for sensing blue light. It is critical for our circadian rhythm. The armed forces use of the color, especially the Navy, lending itself the naming of ’navy blue’, are responsible for establishing the color creditability.

Ultramarine — a true blue meaning unlike others blues tinged with green, it is not and tends to borderline into violet. Ultramarine is an exceptionally long-lasting color.

Cobalt— a synthetic color substitute created for ultramarine.

Indigo — jeans are the first to mind. The color ages well, due to arduous efforts of extracting the dye from plants, and is one of the most colorfast of all natural dyes. Indigo does not require a mordant or fixative to adhere to fabric.

Prussian blue — a color favored by Picasso in his blue phase, and famously known as the color lending itself to, and giving us the name, ‘blueprints’.

Egyptian blue — first named by the Romans, though it was the Egyptians and their highly valued color depiction leading to the naming by the Romans. To the Egyptians, the color represented the sky, the Nile, creation, divinity, and dissolution of evil, nurturing prosperity.

Woad — another plant based pigment loved by William Morris. When textiles are dipped into woad, the result first result would be a like a grassy color, turning into a deeper green, and then finally into the blue. It’s a magical color so-to-speak. Indigo can also be extracted from the plant too.

Electric blue — the glow of Chernobyl in 1986 and known also as the color of St. Elmo’s fire.

Cerulean — the Devil Wears Prada color mention. Called bleu céleste in French or heavenly blue in English. And the symbolic color of the UN.
